Opening Act began programming at Samuel Gompers High School in the Fall of 2006. Located in one of the poorest districts in the country, Gompers has defied the grim statistics of its neighborhood, turning around its school over the past ten years to lower its drop-out rate and bring order and a new sense of possibility to the school. The school offers a variety of technical and engineering programs, but we found its students thirsting for artistic opportunities. During our second year at Gompers, we had an incredibly committed ensemble of actors who wowed their teachers and administrators with their original play, Acquired Lies, at The Public Theater in May. The actors showcased not only their amazing improvisation skills but also their ability to write and perform poetry. Their teaching artists were unbelievably proud of the risks each actor took and the growth each student had shown on and off the stage.
