The High School for Graphic and Communication Arts is a vocational high school with a tough reputation, which is—under the leadership of a new principal and young energized staff—staging a comeback. Students can take courses in the visual arts and printing craft, but, despite being located only steps from the heart of New York City’s theater district, before Opening Act, there were no theater opportunities for aspiring actors. The school building is large (seven floors) and students line up to enter through one of three security stations each day. 2005-2006 was Opening Act’s first year partnering with Graphic, and we have had a remarkably talented group of young actors participate in our program every year since. This past spring the Graphic actors challenged themselves and took huge risks as they explored gender roles and relationships in an original piece entitled Alex and Dakota. We could not have been more proud of their performance, and were particularly moved by the real ‘family’ the Graphic actors created within their ensemble.
2009-2010 Teaching Artists: Danielle Levanas and Sue-Kate Heaney
