2008-2009 marked Opening Act’s sixth year at Walton. This school has been in the midst of a ‘phase out’ plan since 2004, a process that many of the city’s largest—and toughest—schools are undergoing through the Department of Education. The once large, overcrowded school has been replaced with five smaller, individual schools that are ‘housed’ within a single building. Opening Act has stayed at Walton throughout this process and two years ago opened up our programming to students in all of the schools that now make up the Walton Educational Campus. The results are remarkable. This past spring, a tight-knit ensemble of actors committed themselves to creating their own version of Romeo and Juliet entitled Dry. The students used not only improvisation, but also dance and ensemble trust exercises to create an extremely moving and heartfelt piece. We look forward to another successful year at The Walton Campus.
